I spent most of December in Alberta. The ground was covered in snow and the magpies were darting around, their black wings against the white snow. People think they are a pest but I think they are grand birds.

The thing about magpies is: people who live in parts of the world where they are common are unimpressed by them; they're annoyances. But here in Vancouver, we don't get them, so we like them. I was in Banff, chasing the damn things around with my camera, and the locals thought I was nuts.
